A Holiday Wish

Christmas is a time of reflection for me. It’s a time when the smell of bread baking or the refrain of a Christmas carol can bring back a flood of memories of holiday traditions which have been handed down from generation to generation. It also brings back memories of those who came before me, of those who made me who I am. They live on in me. They are in how I think. They are in the stories I tell my son. They taught me how to cherish my family and friends. This year is no different.

Christmas 2025

As part of my reflecting, I look back at my cards of Christmases past.  Today’s post features what may be my favorite card of them all, created several years ago, when my style was much different than it is today.  Although it was heavily distressed, the snowflakes seemed to take on a glow of their own.  Pearls adorned their centers, and a beautiful bow was the finishing touch.  I would like to think I still had this beauty tucked away somewhere, but sadly it was sent off to someone, a name which I do not recall. I would like to think that that they loved it as much as I did, and that it is tucked away among their mementos. Perhaps it is framed and displayed during the holidays. I hope that no matter what happened to it, it brightened their day.

My heart is warmed by memories of Christmases past and the memories of those who enriched and blessed my life.  But I also rejoice in those who share my life now.

Good Boy Nueve – The one who holds my heart in his paws.

These three brighten my days with their antics and fill my heart with joy.

As for my human kids, Brady and Korin are not able to come home for Christmas. They are celebrating the first Christmas in their first home. They will be building their own holiday traditions. And thus, the cycle of traditions continues on.  Although they will not be with us physically, we will video chat with them. I will hold them close in my heart.

Always at this time of year my thoughts turn to my childhood and growing up on the farm. Although we were poor in terms of material goods, we were rich in those things which are truly valuable…family and friends. Christmases past were not about the presents or the tree. They were about family. Grandmas and grandpas; aunts, uncles and cousins; my mother, my father and sister and brothers — all would join together during the holidays, sharing in a fellowship of love. Although most of those who shared these memories with me live on only in my heart, I realize that I am still blessed with a wonderful family of friends – my stamping friends – whom I have met through the years. We share. We care. We form alliances and relationships. We inspire. We encourage. We laugh together. We cry together. From my heart to yours, here is my holiday wish for you: I wish you a blessed holiday season and the happiest of New Years! May all your wishes come true!

Oatmeal Cake, Nueve And A Card

It’s been a busy time at The Stampin’ Schach! While most of last week was spent helping Nueve finalize his tricks for his Trick Dog Test, I also found time to make my momma’s old-fashioned oatmeal cake, and make a birthday card for my daughter-in-law, Korin. It’s going to me a long post, so without further ado, let’s get started with some cake!

Momma’s Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Cake

If you are a fan of a super moist cake with a comfort-food vibe, I hope you give this old-fashioned oatmeal cake a try. It’s a recipe that has stood the test of time in my family. In typical “Momma” style, the directions were minimal with no title. Her original recipe is still in my folder, brown, brittle and faded. I don’t have the heart to through it out…

I have retyped it, of course, and included the topping, which was located on the back of the original recipe. Just looking at the picture of the cake I made makes my mouth water! While it may not be considered a traditional holiday cake, I consider it a perfect winter cake!

It bakes perfectly in my trusty, old pan, but for the holidays it does look festive in my Fiesta baker.

If you do decide to use a ceramic baker, remember to adjust the temperature lower (I drop down to 325°) and add extra time to the baking. Ready to bake? Here’s the recipe:

Momma’s Old-fashioned Oatmeal Cake

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9” x 13” pan.

Ingredients For The  Cake                                                                

1 C  Old fashioned oats                                                                                                      

1-1/2 C Boiling water                                        

1 C  Brown Sugar                                              

1 C  White Sugar

½ C  Shortening or Butter (room temp) – I use whichever one I have on hand

2  Eggs

1-½ C  Flour

1 tsp  Cinnamon

1 tsp  Baking Soda

½ tsp  Salt

A Dash of LOVE

Ingredients:  Topping (Note: Momma always doubled this, and so do I)

¼ C Butter

2/3 C Brown sugar

3 T Milk or Cream (I always use milk, and it is definitely rich enough)

½ tsp Vanilla

1 C Coconut (I added this…it wasn’t in Momma’s original recipe)

½ C Pecans, chopped

Instructions For Cake:

  1. Place boiling water over oatmeal.  Let stand for 20 minutes.
  2. Cream brown sugar, white sugar and shortening (or butter).  Then add eggs and beat well.
  3. Fold in oatmeal mixture.
  4. Add flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Beat until well blended.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees in a greased 9” x 13” pan for 35 – 40 minutes.

Instructions For Topping:

  1. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add brown sugar and milk.  Stir until smooth.
  3. Add vanilla, and stir.
  4. Add chopped pecans and coconut.  Heat until thick.  Spread on top of warm cake.

Nueve’s Notes

Hey, everyone! It’s me, Nueve! I am now an official Trick Dog! I did it! I did 15 tricks and earned TWO AKC Trick Dog titles. Dad didn’t come in to watch me ’cause he had to stay out in the van to keep it warm for Sixxy and Uncle Q, so I don’t have very many pictures of me doing tricks. My teacher did take two and my mom took some at home while I was practicing.

See this stool I have my feet on? It’s the little step stool that Mom uses so she can reach the cake pans on the top shelf. I used it for my Paws Up trick. I stand on it and look handsome.

Another trick I did was Carry. I had to carry something for 15 feet. I carried one of my toys.

I carried it a whole bunch farther than 15 feet. The judge laughed and told me I didn’t have to carry it any farther. She thought it was funny when I got it back out of my bag of tricks and wanted to carry it again.

I also did a push button. The judge laughed really hard at this trick because my mom said, “Tell the judge what you are.”

I pushed it with my nose, and it said “Good boy!”

The judge took this picture of me on the wobble board. It wiggles and you have to balance yourself on it.

She also took a picture of me solving my doggy puzzle. But my favorite trick of the night, and the judge’s too, was Peek-A-Boo, where I sit in front of my mom and then run around behind her and sit between her legs.

I had so much fun playing Trick Dog! The judge loved on me and petted me after I was done. She said I was awesome. She was smiling. Mom was smiling. The people watching me were all smiling. Yep! Making people smile is just one of my jobs. I am a Working Dog! I am Good Boy Nueve.

Happy Birthday, Korin

Today’s card probably looks a little different. Why? It was created using a die set and embossing folder from Altenew’s Chocolate Flowers collection.

After seeing the gorgeous card created by my Paper Players design teammate, Jaydee, HERE, I knew I wanted to play with these dies to create a birthday card for my daughter-in-law, Korin. I used Stampin’ Up!’s inks to color the die cut flowers, which were cut from Basic White cardstock. Of course, I had to add sparkle to the centers of the flowers.
