Before and After Music Expressions

Stampin’ Pastels and Blender Pens are a dynamic duo when it comes to creating a subtle watercolored look with no muss or fuss. Their impact is even more dramatic when you view the before and after results.
This card, which uses one of my favorite sets…“Music Expressions”, was designed using this week’s Our Creative Corner sketch. This is such a versatile layout, I am sure that I will add it to my arsenal of favorites!
  • Create a standard card base using Chocolate Chip and score at the top.
  • Cut two strips of “Brown Baroque” Bella Birds Designer Series Paper and layer onto So Saffron. Adhere to the card base. (Bella Birds Designer Series Paper is on the Last Chance list. It is fabulous paper. If you wish to order this paper, please click here: Order Your Stampin’ Up! Supplies Now! )
  • Ink the “Violin” image from the Music Expressions stamp set with Basic Brown and stamp onto Very Vanilla. Mat onto So Saffron, followed by Chocolate Chip. Adhere to the card base at an angle as shown. (Tip: If you wish, you can leave the image uncolored, or “express” yourself with Stampin’ Pastels and Blender Pens prior to matting. The choice is yours!)
  • Attach 1/4″ Very Vanilla and Chocolate Chip Grosgrain Ribbons as illustrated.
  • Ink the sentiment from Music Expressions with Basic Brown and stamp onto Very Vanilla. Mat with So Saffron, followed by Chocolate Chip. Pop it onto the card base using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  • For a little bling, attach Circle Fire Brads in the corners of the image and sentiment blocks.
Stampin’ Tip of the Day: Victor Hugo, better known as the author of Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, was an inspiration for some of the greatest musical composers of the 19th and 20th century. Both Liszt and Berlioz were friends of Hugo. Victor Hugo’s quote, “Music expresses that which cannot be said” underscores this author’s influence on the musical world. Just like these composers gained their inspiration from an unlikely source, so can we as cardmakers. The next time you are reading a magazine, searching through newspaper ads, or even grocery shopping, be on the lookout for color combinations and layouts that you like. With just a few creative twists, you can make these designs your own. And never underestimate the design power of Mother Nature herself!

A Final Walk in the Park

A Walk in the Park Designer Series Paper has been one of my favorites ever since it appeared in the Occasions Mini Catalog. I have used it on several cards and scrapbook layouts, and felt compelled to use it one more time before it retires. If you are going to miss this collection as much as I am, there is still time to order it. All items from the Occasions Mini Catalog are available until June 30th. This is also a great time to host a workshop and earn extra merchandise during Stampin’ Up!s Summer Hostess Benefit Promotion. As your Hostess Gift, you can select “God’s Beauty“, the Hostess Level 1 set which is featured on today’s card. Are you ready to take one final “Walk in the Park” with me?
  • Make a standard card base from Very Vanilla card stock. Score at the top. Layer with So Saffron. (Tip: I selected the textured version of these card stocks for their beauty. Don’t you just love how the textured So Saffron looks?)
  • Ink the “Leaf” stamp from God’s Beauty with Kiwi Kiss and stamp onto Very Vanilla. Use the Corner Rounder on the two right hand side corners. Mat onto “So Saffron Floral”, then “Kiwi Kiss Geometric” papers, both from the A Walk in the Park Designer Series Paper collection.
  • Coat the leaves with Crystal Effects and set aside to dry. (Tip: Crystal Effects will add a shine when dry, as well as add texture. It is so easy to use. I just apply it by using the applicator tip. However, you can use a brush if you prefer. If you have not tried Crystal Effects before, it is a very cost effective way to add depth and dimension.)
  • Cut a strip of “Kiwi Kiss Geometric” paper and layer with 1/4″ Very Vanilla Grosgrain Ribbon. Position and adhere to the card base as shown.
  • Texturize a piece of Kiwi Kiss card stock using the “Swirls” plate from Stampin’ Up! Backgrounds I and the Big Shot. Using a Nestabilities scalloped circle die and the Big Shot, cut a circle from the texturized Kiwi Kiss card stock. Position and adhere to the card base. (Tip: It only takes a minute to use the Stampin’ Up! Texturz Plates, but what visual impact they give to any piece of card stock!)
  • Position and adhere the image mat to the card base as illustrated.
  • Ink the sentiment and the blossom from “God’s Beauty” with Really Rust and stamp onto Very Vanilla card stock. Mat the sentiment onto Really Rust card stock and round the two right hand corners, once again using the Corner Rounder Punch. Layer and adhere on top of the scalloped circle. (Tip: Rounding two of the corners mimic the scallops on the circle, while breaking up the angularity of the card.)
  • Using Paper Snips, cut out the blossom and insert a mini-brad through the center. Pop it up with a Stampin’ Dimensional. (Tip: Stampin’ Up!s Paper Snips are perfect for making intricate cuts!)

Today’s card was designed with Card Positioning Systems Sketch 118 in mind. Sketches can serve as a catalyst to get the creative juices flowing. In addition, resources such as magazine ads can serve as inspirations for both layouts and colors!

Tip of the Day: So Saffron and Kiwi Kiss coordinate perfectly. However, Really Rust adds the perfect amount of contrast. Don’t be afraid to experiment when it comes to color combinations! An unexpected color can often make the difference between a card that “pops” and a card that “flops”!

Au Revoir, Parisian Breeze, Mon Ami

Parisian Breeze is another one of Stampin‘ Up!s glorious Designer Series Papers that is listed on the Last Chance Accessories List. I wanted to share with you one last time the beauty and versatility of this paper. Parisian Breeze combines dots, stripes and florals in luscious patterns which coordinate with Baja Breeze, Chocolate Chip, and Kraft. Textured, cover-weight card stock, it is suitable for both cards and scrapbook pages. Also featured on today’s card is the Level 2 Hostess set, Echoes of Kindness. This set could be yours by hosting a workshop. I am especially excited about the Summer Fun Hostess Bonus Promotion. It is always fun to host a workshop, but its even more fun when there are extra benefits in store!
  • Prepare a 5-1/4″ by 5-1/4″ card base from Kraft.
  • Select the “Blue Floral” and “Dots” papers from the Parisian Breeze Specialty Designer Series Paper and layer onto the card base as shown.
  • Adhere 5/8″ Chocolate Chip Grosgrain Ribbon at the interface of the two patterns.
  • Ink the “Kind Words” sentiment from Echoes of Kindness with Bordering Blue and Chocolate Chip Stampin‘ Write Markers. Stamp onto Very Vanilla. (Tip: I stamped the italicized words in Bordering Blue and the remaining words in Chocolate Chip for emphasis. In addition, I “huffed” to reactivate the ink, since it does take a little time to ink the stamp.)
  • Ink the smaller “Floral” image from Echoes of Kindness with Chocolate Chip and stamp onto Very Vanilla. Use Stampin‘ Pastels and Blender Pens to “watercolor” the image.
  • Mat both the sentiment block and floral block onto Bordering Blue, then Chocolate Chip. Position and adhere these blocks onto the “Blue and Kraft Floral” selection from the Parisian Breeze collection as illustrated. Mat this onto Chocolate Chip and adhere onto the card base.
  • Using the Scallop Circle Punch, cut a circle from the “Chocolate Chip Floral” Parisian Breeze paper. Adhere to the card using StampinDimensionals.
  • Ink the “Butterfly” stamp from the Great Friend set with Bordering Blue and stamp onto Very Vanilla. Use Paper Snips to cut out. Adhere to the scalloped circle with Mini Glue Dots.
  • As a finishing touch, I added interest to the upper left corner by attaching a filigree brad that coordinated well with the paper.
If you are interested in purchasing Parisian Breeze, please do not hesitate. When it is gone…it’s gone! I will miss you, Parisian Breeze. Au revoir, mon ami!

Rockabilly Bye-Bye

The release of the “Last Chance List” has everyone scrambling to purchase our “soon-to-be-retired” favorites. I fell in love with Kiwi Kiss the moment I saw it, and the same was true with the Rockabilly Designer Series Paper collection. However, I knew that this affair would eventually have to end. Not wanting to sound fickle, I am already falling in love with the new In-Colors and Designer Series Papers, and during the next few weeks I will be introducing you to the newest members of the Stampin’ Up! color family. However, before I abandon them completely, I want to spend another moment with my old “friends”, featuring them in my interpretation of Splitcoast Sketch 231. Alas, alas! Parting is such sweet sorrow…
  • Make a standard card base from Kiwi Kiss.
  • Cut two strips of “Cherries on White” and one strip of “Cherries on Black” paper from the Rockabilly Designer Series Paper. Mat onto Riding Hood Red and adhere to the card base as illustrated.
  • Ink the “What Can I Say…” sentiment from the Very Versatile stamp set with Basic Black and stamp onto Whisper White.
  • Using the Photo Corners Punch, punch a Riding Hood Red and a Kiwi Kiss corner, and attach to the sentiment block. Mat onto Basic Black. (Tip: To add interest, I adhered the larger Riding Hood Red corner to the back of the sentiment, and the smaller Kiwi Kiss corner to the front.)
  • Adhere a snippet of 1/4″ Basic Black Grosgrain Ribbon as illustrated. Using Stampin’ Dimensionals, position and adhere the sentiment block. (Tip: To accentuate the Kiwi Kiss corner, and direct the eye to the sentiment, I added three black non-Stampin’ Up! rhinestones.)

If you love Kiwi Kiss, Riding Hood Red, and Rockabilly Designer Series Paper as much as I do, please order today! Items from the Last Chance Accessories List are selling out quickly.

Kindred Spirits…Part Two

The Kindred Spirit stamp set possesses a Zen-like quality. Although I often use the stamp featured as a background, I occasionally like to use it as a focal image, such as with today’s card. This set includes two sentiments, “With Sympathy” and “Kindred Spirits”. Just what is a “kindred spirit” you ask? A kindred spirit is “someone who feels and thinks the way you do”. Are you my kindred spirit? You just might be if you love this fabulous Designer Series Paper, Bella Birds.

  • Make a standard card base from “Pink and Gray Floral” Bella Birds Designer Series Paper and score at the top.
  • Ink the Floral stamp from Kindred Spirits with Chocolate Chip ink and stamp onto Very Vanilla card stock. Mat onto the Chocolate Chip selection from Bella Birds.
  • Add a snippet of “Pretty in Pink” Taffeta Ribbon for a spot of color. Attach to the card base.
  • Ink the “Kindred Spirit” sentiment with Chocolate Chip and stamp onto Very Vanilla. Mat onto Pink and Gray Floral Bella Birds Designer Series Paper. Position and adhere to the card as illustrated.
  • I also randomly placed small rhinestone flowers on the image for a little “bling”!

Manhattan Wedding

With the Manhattan Flower Textured Impressions die and the Very Versatile stamp set, you can create cards for a variety of occasions, such as this wedding card. Stampin’ Dimensionals make both the flower and the sentiment “pop” from the Pretty in Pink card base. Here is the recipe for this confection of a card:
  • Make a 5-1/2″ square card base from Pretty in Pink.
  • Using the Big Shot and the Manhattan Flower die, create flowers from Baja Breeze card stock. Cut out using Paper Snips, and attach to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals. (Tip: Stampin’ Up!s Paper Snips are the perfect choice for any intricate cutting.)
  • Cut a strip of Baja Breeze and punch the edge using the Eyelet Border Punch. Repeat with Basic Grey. Layer the Basic Grey over the Baja Breeze. Wrap with Very Vanilla Grosgrain Ribbon. Attach to the card base.
  • Ink the “Wishing You Happiness…” sentiment from the Very Versatile stamp set with Basic Grey, and stamp onto Very Vanilla. Mat with Baja Breeze, Pretty in Pink and Basic Gray. Position and adhere to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I loved the look of Pretty in Pink and Baja Breeze together, a combination which I would describe as “yummy”. Remember that as an “In-Color”, Baja Breeze will be retiring upon the release of the new catalog. If you love this color as much as I do, do not hesitate to order more today. Daisy Pals

What do Pumpkin Pie, So Saffron and Bashful Blue have in common? They were the three colors that were selected for the Pretty Pals Challenge #33! This challenge also included a twist…use a punch. Since I firmly believe that the Bigz Daisies #2 die can create flowers of any color that can be used on any color card, I set out to prove it my theory.
  • A standard card base was made from Whisper White card stock and scored at the top.
  • A layer of So Saffron textured card stock was then added to the card base.
  • A strip of Bashful Blue textured card stock was cut to width and punched with the Scallop Border Punch. It was adhered to the card base as illustrated.
  • Whisper White ribbon was positioned at the top edge of the blue strip.
  • Bashful Blue 1/4″ Grosgrain Ribbon was threaded through a Ribbon Slide from the Hodgepodge Hardware collection and layered on top of the Whisper White ribbon.
  • The Bashful Blue “ribbon strip” was then attached to the card base.
  • Pumpkin Pie card stock was passed through the Big Shot, using the Daisies #2 die. (Tip: To create fullness, I actually created two sets of flowers.) After the flower was assembled, a brad from the Hodgepodge Hardware collection was added to the center to add interest. The daisy was then attached to the card base.

Watching for Birds Scrapbook Page

Like so many other dog owners, our dog is truly a member of our family. When I was serving on the local humane society executive board, a young purebred Boxer was brought into the shelter by the police as an abuse case. Weighing in at a mere twenty pounds, she was suffering from mange, severe ear infection (mud had been packed into her ears), and a variety of behavioral issues stemming from her mistreatment at the hands of teenaged boys. During my daily visits to the shelter, I grew to love this little dog who “adopted” me. As soon as the court papers were processed, and she was available for adoption, Missy came to live at our house. A heartworm and cancer survivor, Missy still retains that youthful, Boxer spunk eleven years later.
Now a matronly twelve years old, which is quite elderly for a Boxer, Missy is the queen of the house. One of her favorite activities is watching for birds through the front windows of our living room. I knew when I purchased Bella Birds Designer Series Paper, that it would be the perfect choice for a scrapbook page of Missy watching for birds. And yes, she has her very own scrapbook! In fact, Missy has requested that I share the recipe for this scrapbook page with you.
  • The photo was matted onto Pink Pirouette, Certainly Celery, and Chocolate Chip. (Tip: I pulled Certainly Celery from the colors in the photo. Of course, Pink Pirouette and Chocolate Chip are the perfect choices to use with Bella Birds.)
  • Using the Photo Corners Punch and Certainly Celery, punch two corners and adhere to opposite corners on the photo.
  • Use a sheet of “Pink Baroque” Bella Birds Designer Series Paper as the layout base. On top of this layer a section of the “Chocolate Chip Birds” paper. (Tip: I actually cut the Chocolate Chip paper so that the three birds would be strategically placed when I adhered my photo.)
  • Adhere Chocolate Chip 5/8″ Grosgrain Ribbon at the upper and lower interfaces of the two pattern papers. On the bottom ribbon, layer Certainly Celery ribbon.
  • Pretty in Pink Taffeta ribbon was then placed through a Ribbon Slide from the Hodgepodge Hardware Collection and positioned on top of the boundary of the Chocolate Chip and Certainly Celery ribbons as illustrated.
  • Lucida Sans Calligraphy font, in brown, was used to print the title onto Very Vanilla, which was then matted on Pink Pirouette, Certainly Celery, and Chocolate Chip. It was positioned and adhered below the photo.
  • “Missy” was printed using the same font and color, and placed in a Raised Dots Designer Holder from the Hodgepodge Hardware Collection. It was attached with brads beside the photo.
  • As a final touch, a Floral Circle Brad from the Hodgepodge Hardware Collection was placed in the upper left corner.
This particular picture of Missy was taken without her knowledge from the opposite side of the house using my zoom lens and the portrait setting on my Canon Digital Rebel. In person, it is an awesome picture and I knew that I had to “scrap” it! What does Missy think about this latest addition to her scrapbook? In her own words, “Bow-WOW!”
The Stampin’ Schach Tip of the Day: Today’s tip is not about stamping or cardmaking. Instead it is a plea for responsible pet ownership. Please spay or neuter your pets. Shelters and breed rescues are overpopulated with the results of unplanned litters. Although shelter dogs can and do make great family pets, such as our Missy, our shelters are over populated 🙂
