The Mini-Muffins Have Arrived…and FREE Shipping

IMG_0838The arrival of the mini-Muffins was not the smooth journey we were anticipating.  After 24 hours of Stage 1 Labor and a call to the emergency vet, Muffy’s water sac broke at 4:32 AM Saturday morning.  However, 30 minutes of active pushing did not produce a puppy.  The vet was called, and met us at her office for a shot of oxytocin.  We thought everything was going to be fine, when Muffy’s first puppy, a little fawn girl, Bunny,  was produced at 7:30 AM.

IMG_1974-001She was followed by a boy at 8:17…

IMG_0709and a boy at 9:18…

IMG_0812and another boy at 9:48.

IMG_0829However, when no other pup had presented by noon, a call was put into the vet again.  We went back for a second oxytocin shot.  By 4:00, she had not went into labor.  But wait…out of the blue she started contractions.  And she pushed, and she pushed, and she pushed, with no luck.  Muffy was exhausted.  Again a call was placed to the vet, and we rushed over.  The puppies were in a box in the front seat with my husband, and I sat in the back with Muffy.  As we were pulling into the vet’s, a baby was born in the back seat.  Little Kia had made her entrance into the world, taking her own sweet time. Although she was stressed, she is still with us.

IMG_0791We knew from the X-ray taken last week, there was at least one more mini-Muffin in the oven.  But, the vet was confident things were in motion.  She gave Muffy a third shot of oxytocin, and sent us home.  However, once we were home, something just did not feel right.  I looked into Muffy’s eyes, and I knew there was something wrong.  So…once again…I called the vet.  We loaded up the crew, and once again headed to the vet.  I cradled an exhausted Muffy in my arms.  Another X-ray showed the final puppy way up high. The chances Muffy would be able to give birth to it were slim, and there was a chance the puppy could be in distress or even be dead.  The decision was made to have a C-section done. My vet called in the surgeon and a vet tech, and at 6:00 on the eve before Easter, Muffy was led into surgery.

My heart sank when Dr. Rita returned a few minutes later with a box…”Dr. Remmers is still with Muffy.  The puppy was in distress…but I was able to bring it around.” And in the box was a beautiful little girl…Miracle…Mira.

IMG_0790Later, Dr. Remmers came in and said Muffy did fine.  Her uterus was healthy, and they were able to do a fairly small incision.  They brought Muffy in, and laid her on the floor next to her box of babies.  She slowly woke up, with Kim and I, her vets, and her babies at her side.

Muffy and the “problem girls” are not out of the woods yet.  Last night, Muffy developed preeclampsia, and was taken back to the clinic for an IV of electrolytes.  She is under close observation here at home, and the problem girls are being fed every two hours.  Of course, I am sleeping by the box.

IMG_0835So the bottom line is we have 3 beautiful girls…Bunny, Kia, and Mira…and three handsome young lads…with no names yet.  We have one exhausted and recuperating mother who is so proud of her new babies, and one exhausted, sleep-deprived owner.  Let us pray all the problems are behind us, and the future holds nothing but love for one-half dozen Mini-Muffins.

  7. Thank Heaven the mini-muffins have arrived. And thank Heaven for the wonderful, amazing people who devote their careers to our furry friends. Keep us posted on the family’s development.

  8. Your Mini Muffin Chronicles were absolutely the best reading I’ve had in awhile, especially with the happy ending. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat while reading your highly interesting narrative. I felt like I was in on every decision that was made by the vet and Miss Muffy’s family. I’ve always been interested in the mammal birthing process. Never knew that our canine companions were also given Pitocin to speed the labor process on. I didn’t even know the gestation period for dogs. Miss Muffy’s journey through motherhood was so informative.
    Thanks again for sharing,

  9. So happy to hear that all is well with mama, babies and human mama! I have kept up with the story and glad of the final outcome. We do love our furry babies, don
t we? Please keep us posted.

  10. Congrats to Muffy for being a great “trooper” and for you and Kim for being very devoted and understanding to Muffy’s needs. You have a special bond with Muffy and she with you to be able to look into her eyes and “know” she needed you. The mini muffin 6 pack are absolutely adorable and from one breeder to another…just sleep in the whelping box! Having all those babies cuddling with you is the absolute BEST! (Yes I slept in the box and spent many hours just sitting in it as well as our sons). Hopefully the “girls” are coming along and catching up to the other 4. Can’t wait to hear how Brady, Brody and baby Lexi have adapted and oh the stories they will tell! Wait til the 6 pack are a few more weeks old and chasing them! Enjoy the time as you earned every spoiling minute with all of them! Best to everyone. K:)

  31. So sorry that poor Muffy had to go through so much and I know it was hard on you as well. Praying that Muffy and the little girls continue to improve! Years ago one of my cats went into labor and there were no kittens after a number of hours so off we went to the vet at midnight. She had to have a C-section too. I remember the anxiety of feeling like an expectant father sitting out in that waiting room.

  32. Surely hope all goes well now and that you will be able to get some rest! Congratulations! The waiting is over…sorry it was such a difficult delivery!

  33. I had seen the posts on facebook about the little “muffins” being born but I had no idea it was such an ordeal for Muffy and for you & Kim. Those babies are just so cute! Will keep all of you in my prayers that everything will be OK from now on.

  35. Hugs to you and Kim. What a journey for you all. So relieved to hear more info since I figured the delays meant there were some hiccups. These babies are beautiful and relieved to hear that Muffy is doing ok. Another St. Francis prayer going up.

  36. Wow… trial by fire. What’s that quote – “nothing worth having is easy”? Geesh. I’m hoping all the stress is behind you; the tiredness, well that comes with the territory (motherhood) lol. Looks like you have some good, strong pups on the ground now and a pretty awesome first-time mom. So happy for all of you!

  37. Tears in my eyes – prayers in my heart. Please let Muffy know we’re rooting for her!!

  38. Congratulations and all good wishes to the new mama and babies!

  43. How exciting and scary and exhausting for all of you! Poor proud Muffy does look pooped. So glad you have a wonderful vet. I think I would be like you and not leave the side of the dogs. Praying all goes well and everyone and every dog does fine.

  44. OMG! That is the best story yet. I tear with happiness for Muffy. What a proud Mama she must be and proud doggy grandparents you two are. The puppies are just about the cutest little puppies I have ever seen. Best of luck to all of you!

  45. The puppies are so cute! I hope Muffy and the “problem girls” get well soon and you get some sleep! Since they are mini muffins and muffins come in blueberry and cranberry flavors, maybe you could name one of the boys Berry…if you are taking suggestions.

  46. congrats on those 6 squeezable muffins … i also didn’t anticipate complications …figured puppy whelping was easy stuff …hope everyone gets well

  47. So sorry for all the complications. Hope Muffy and all the puppies are on the road to recovery and good health, and that you and Kim get caught up on your rest.

  49. Congratulations! Get some rest. 🙂

  50. Hi Ann, I too guessed six little backbones in that picture! I’m so glad the ordeal is over for the family. Wow, that was stressful and one born in the back seat too. Geez, you are such a good mother to Muffy. Hope they all make it and Muffy recovers quickly. All the best, Peg

  51. Ann, as I sat here reading your step by step ordeal I began to cry. Oh my heart was a little sad but in the end things are working out fine. All the little the must precious time of giving birth is so tight with feeling and know how much needs to be done. Thank goodness that the vet was there at your beck and call. Just wonderful. Glad it is over and things will recoup slowly back to normal. Thank you with our hearts on the update and all the pictures. We will continue to keep prayers for everyone. Sending lots of hugs to all. Again thank you!
