I wish I had a happy post today. A cheery card to make you smile. A funny story to make you laugh. Instead I need to share information about Lexi with you. Lexi is the youngest of the Schach Boxers…a whirlwind bundle of wiggling butt and a tongue that nails you when you least expect it. She’s as ornery as sin…
and she is beautiful and elegant.
She has won big…
and has a promising future.
After a few months away from the show circuit, Lexi headed off to Indianapolis with her handler, Amy, preparing to return home victorious. Instead, she contracted a virus that left her in a severely emaciated state. Amy took excellent care of her, taking her to the show vet, and then taking her to her vet in Chicago. But Lexi was still unable to kick the virus that other dogs had recovered from in 24 hours. In the span of one week, Lexi’s weight dropped from 55.6 pounds to 45.8 pounds. Amy was concerned that we could lose her. You could see every vertebrae…every rib.
When I picked Lexi up to bring her home Friday, and saw her condition with my own eyes, I rushed her straight to my vet, who did a complete blood panel, an abdominal X-ray, and a stool analysis/culture. All of the results came back normal…which is good…but also bad because we still have no idea why she was hit so hard by this.
On the upside, since she has returned home, she has started to eat again. Her stools are returning to normal, and she is not vomiting. And most importantly, the sparkle is returning to her eyes. Slowly but surely, she is getting better. Because of her lack of body fat, she gets cold easily. But the Twins, in that way that dogs have, know she is not well. They have been so good with snuggling with her.
I wanted to share this with you, because so many of you have followed the escapades of the furbabies. We have a long road ahead of us in getting Lexi healthy. Until next time…

Hi Anne,
My Bichon Maltese Jovie had leptospirosis and my husband and I went through the worry you are feeling for Lexi. I’m glad to hear she is on the mend. I will say an extra prayer for her to keep healing.
So hoping and praying that your darling and sweet Lexi recovers soon and completely and will be back out on the circuit winning more medals and awards. Happy that her handler did as much as she could for Lexi but obviously she needed to be home with her mom/dad and the twins to really get back to being the adorable Lexi. Big hugs to you and gentle pats to Lexi…looking forward to a good follow up – thank you for sharing this story!
Prayers! Keep us posted!
Ohh Ann, I was so concerned when I saw the photos of Lexi and then I had to read! It is wonderful to know that she is on the mend probably hastened by the fact that she has a wonderful and caring handler and she would have felt more comfortable back in her own home too. If she is eating, she is feeling way better!
I am enjoying looking at your gorgeous cards – have had to catch up a bit!!
I’m so sorry to hear that Lexi became so ill ans lost so much weight. I hope that she continues to get better Ann. She is a beauty for sure.
Mary
Ann so glad Lexi is on the mend and probably because she missed home…. who doesn’t want to be by MOM when we are sick, right?
Keep us posted on the recovery to normal… which I’m sure will come soon now. hugs
Hi, Ann. I’m so sorry that Lexie has been so ill. Glad to hear that she is doing better. It is so scary when our “babies” are sick. Hopefully being home with her family will soon have her well. I know if I feel bad, I just want to go home! I know you are taking great care of her and it eases your mind to have her in arms reach. Will be praying for you and Lexie. Please be sure and update us on her recovery. Thinking of you and your family!
Of course I meant to type Lexie, not Le8. Lol
Ann I think you already know from the number of comments to this post how much your followers care about you and the fur babies. I hope the positive news that Le8 was beginning to improve continues and that she will soon be back to normal. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
Oh my, your heart has to be breaking seeing her like that but I know she will get better now that she is at home with her loving mom, dad, sister and brothers. I will keep her in my prays and please keep us up to date.
Anne, so sorry to hear about poor Lexi. I am a SU demo and follower of your blog and LOVE reading about your ‘babies’. As an owner/mommy to three schnauzers I understand. We also have one of our ‘girls’ that mysteriously got sick, dropped weight dramatically but she is slowly gaining weight and is much improved. It’s a slow process but we treasure each day that we have with her. I will be praying for you and Lexi. Hugs!!!
I’m so sorry, I’ve only just read this. Poor darling, I do hope she gets better soon and is back to her old self.
You had me a little scared there Ann, I thought she had gotten worse. So, glad to hear she is doing better. I don’t know what took little Henry on Sunday but it sure was scary for us. You had to be out of your mind with worry until she was home. Thoughts, prayers, and lots of hugs to you and your family. I think there will be a lucky dog out there for us to adopt pretty soon. Thank you for all your your thoughts and prayers too for us.
Chris R. from Iowa
I know how much you love your fur babies. My prayers are with you for a quick and complete recovery for Lexi.
Poor sweet thing. Please keep us up on her progress since we are all worried for her (and you). Thinking of you all as you work to get her back to healthy. Hugs!
Oh man! I hate to hear Lexi is ailing. My prayers to her that she is recovering and will soon be her old self again. Prayers to you also, as I know you love her so much.
Thank you so much for the info. and the sharing. I have always loved the picture of the three of you. She is a capturer of hearts and so beautiful. I am gratified to hear of her having some better days. Hoping the worst is over for her and for you and Kim. Even my husband is asking how she is doing, and wants a update on her condition.
Thanks for letting us know. Many others have said what I would say, so I merely send hugs for you, Lexi and her siblings. Looking forward to hearing good news as she recovers.
Ann, I’m so glad that she is feeling better. Please know that I’m praying for her to continue to heal quickly.
Ann,
So glad Lexi seems to be on the mend. Sometimes a virus can be more wicked than a bacterial infection. And, there is no medicine except for rest, love and good nutrition. Hugs to you both.

As always, I am with you, hoping, praying, and sending all best thoughts. Hope that helps. Hang in there – you will make her all better, soon.
I am so sorry to hear this but know she will recover. I think she missed home and mom. Maybe the show circuit was just too much for her. She missed snuggling and being at home. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. Only us dog lovers would understand. Snuggles from me. And my Honey for Lexi.
Oh Ann, I am so very sorry that Lexi is sick, I know you must be beside yourself with worry, wondering what could possibly be making her this ill. I hope and pray that Lexi’s vet can find out what is wrong so she can recover quickly. Healing ~~~~~ go her way, with love.
Ann, I am so sorry…and I know you must be so worried. Maybe being at home, surrounded by all the love and all things familiar will boost her immune system and she’ll turn the corner. Sending you a big hug!
Ann – my thoughts and prayers are with your Lexi and you both. Hoping for a speedy recovery and some answers for you all soon. So glad she is showing signs of improvement at home already. It’s hard to watch our furry friends go through suffering when they can’t tell us what is wrong. You have a wonderful support team with your vet and handler so I hope answers are found soon and Lexi continues to improve.
Although I am a cat person, I love all critters and I know Lexi will be better in no time! How can she not when she has such a wonderful human mom? My Maine Coon Leonidas, my Norwegian Forest Eleanor (aka Queen of Norway) and my calico Sunshine all send their purrs and kisses to you and Lexi.
Thanks for sharing about Lexi; with all of the TLC she is receiving at home she will be better in no time! Take care and please continue to keep us informed with her progress. Hugs!
As I started reading, I literally got scared this wasn’t going to have a good ending. But the more I read I was relieved but I’m not totally relieved at this point! I’m sending much needed blessings and prayers to Lexi as well as you, Ann! Hang in there! I’m sure that Lexi is glad to be home with you and the twins which will help a great deal in itself. I know you’ll keep us posted! I look forward to some good news and the sooner the better!!
So sorry you have to go through all this, Ann…as well as Lexi. Hope everything keeps improving quickly.
Best Wishes!
Diane Gil
That is so scary! I sure hope she continues to do well. Sounds like she just took longer to get rid of it. She wants to stay home with you 🙂 We love our babes don’t we.
Ann, hopefully now that Lexi is home, she will start to recover. There’s nothing like being with the people you love… I will say a prayer for her.
o, my goodness, I’m heart broken & as I write this a kennel in Ontario burnt & 4 dogs didn’t survive…human hugs to a wonderful dog; she’ll do much better, now that she’s home.
I am so very sorry! I have two dogs – Westies – and they have my heart. My elder dog is having problems now, so I totally sympathize with you. I will say a prayer to St. Francis for both our beloved pups tonight. Good luck – I have a feeling Lexi couldn’t be in better hands.
Poor Lexi and poor you! I’m glad to read that Lexi seems to be improving. Maybe once she got sick she just missed you so bad. Isn’t it wonderful that your other boxers are being so nice and helping to keep Lexi warm. 🙂
There’s no love that can compare to a mother’s love! Being home has to be a huge comfort to Ms. Lexi. I’m sure the twins have missed her as well. Will continue to keep you all in my prayers. Thank you for the update…hope the next one is even better!
So sorry to hear about Lexi but so happy that she is improving. I always look forward to your blog with boxer update and beautiful cards.

Sending prayers and hugs for Lexi, be sure to post updates please.
Ann, I am so sorry to hear about Lexie. It’s good to hear that there is sparkle in her eyes and she is eating now. I will be thinking of her and the entire family (which includes the twins, too). Hugs.
Ann, like all kids, when they are sick, they want to be home with mom. Perhaps that is what it took to get her on the road to recovery
I am so glad she is finally getting better.
Julie
Hugs and praying she recovers quickly.
Ann, I am so sorry to hear your news that she is still struggling. I will keep her in my prayers, along with your Vet staff that they will know how to treat her. It’s great to hear she is improving and I’m thankful for your update. Your pictures just break my heart, she is such a beautiful dog. I think being home and lots of tlc has made all the difference! Hugs to you all.
I think, like any child when they get sick, she just wanted momma!!! Hugs and Prayers for you and Miss Lexi !! Wendy
I meant to say prayers!
Oh Anne, so sorry about Lexie. I am in agreement with Pam. All we can do is keep giving warmth and love. Oh, and a few praters can’t hurt! Will do that! Keep us posted on Lexie.
OMGosh, Ann, this is hitting so close to home. We just went through this exact same scenario with my Whippet, Sadie. After 3 different vets looking at her and numerous tests, blood work and X-rays, no one knew what was wrong with her. She got sick in November and within the last two weeks, has started feeling better. To this day, we do not know what was wrong with her. She was on 4 different antibiotics and 2 different anti inflammatory meds. She is now putting weight on and her fur looks healthy again.
My heart breaks for what you all are going through. I hope Lexi continues to improve every hour. It is so hard to watch our fur babies sick as they can’t tell us what is wrong.
Keep us posted on her recovery. I always look forward to your Boxer posts and pictures…and of course those gorgeous cards!
I am so glad Lexi is back home. Here’s hoping all the love she feels will help her recover quickly.
