It’s Thursday, and time to play with the Pals at Pals Paper Arts! This week, we have an awesome sketch from Nicole Watt…just perfect for showing off Stampin’ Up!’s new Designer Series Paper. My desire to use the fabulous new Retro Fresh patterns caused quite the internal struggle. One part of me was saying, “Ann, keep it simple. Use an embossed panel on top of that card base.” But another part of me was crying out, “Ann…take a risk! Mix those patterns! Do it! DO IT!” So I DID! I did mix those patterns. I liked it, but I didn’t love it…
With a sense of sadness, I disassembled my card.
I pulled out my embossing folders. When I felt none of them would give the result I was searching for, I decided to use Very Vanilla Core’dinations cardstock for my back panel. The second card was born. I loved it! And that other little voice…you know…the one that wanted me to “Keep it simple?” …whispered in my ear, “I told you so”.
I miss my fun and funky little card, but its memory lives on. And who knows, I may resurrect that design. After all, tomorrow is another day.
The Stampin’ Schach’s Design Tips
This finished card measures, 5-1/2″ long by 4-1/4″.
- A “Peachy” pop up! What better way to step up a sentiment than to stamp the sentiment twice in coordinating colors, snip out a key word, and “pop” it up on dimensionals. I picked out a food combination…Tangerine Tango and Baked Brown Sugar to create this yummy sentiment.
- Direct the focus! All arrows point to the sentiment. You can bet that I want the recipient of this card to know that she is “peachy keen”.
- Flossing is good for you! An easy way to remove card components from the card base is to use dental floss. The flat kind works best. Just slip it under the edge of the layer you wish to remove, and floss away!
What a difference a card base can make! I seriously had a very difficult time selecting which card I really like the best. I hate it when that happens. In the end, I went with the “cleaner” one. What about you? Which one did you like the best? Won’t you let me know in today’s comment? And remember, if you ever have a question about the cards I create or the techniques I use, I am only an email away!
Until next time…
Stamp Set: Peachy Keen; Inks: Tangerine Tango, Baked Brown Sugar; Designer Series Paper: Retro Fresh; Cardstock: Tangerine Tango, Coastal Cabana, Very Vanilla, Very Vanilla Core’dinations; Tools: Big Shot, On Film Framelits, Chevron Punch, Paper Snips; Glitz and Glam: Pearls

Even though this set and DSP do not appeal to me, I love what you did…most especially the pearl arrow!!!!!
I have to admit that I like the first one best….I just love those patterns and prints together! The second one is wonderful too! And what a great idea about the dental floss…who knew?
As with all your cards, they are both great but I sure do love that funky first one. It was a great mix of dsp. And thanks for the tip about the floss. Will have to give it a try.
#1 too busy
#2 just right
#3 thanks for the flossing tip. Whoo Hoo! I’ll probably end up needing to use that tip by days end..LOL
Well, Scarlett, I like them both but I think this time I like the first one best and sorry I can’t say why, don’t know, just do : )
You are too funny. I like both cards, but the ‘devil’ one (first one) really stands out. Love how you added the pearls along the arrow.
The cleaner base allows you to see the details such as the pearls on the sentiment panel and the arrow. I like the first card but you lose those elements that are so pearlfect in one of your signature cards.
I think they are both fresh and fun!
I like the first one best. I love mixing patterns, and I thought yours went together well. I always tend to think that’s what the designer series papers are for, mixing together.
I, too, could just visualize you talking this all out! I prefer card #2 as it goes together well and doesn’t compete with the background. Like you said you want the “peachy keen” sentiment to stand out. I do love the retro background paper on card #1 so maybe use it for another sketch or another try at this sketch. Besides, card #1 didn’t show off your lovely pearls! I really like this posting showing the two different looks! Plus, dental floss – I would have never thought about it and I seem to take a lot of my cards apart and this will be tried soon! I hate when they stick so well! Hope you and the fur babies are keeping warm, that wind chill factor is not fun!

I think they are both fantastic!
both are wonderful cards but I do like the 2nd one best.
For me, the backing paper was much of a distraction for your focal point.
I actually like the textured background so much better. Well done.
Great tip on use of the dental floss. I keep floss in my kitchen as well as that is what I use when cutting my cinnamon rolls.
Enjoy your day and have a wonderful week and do stay warm
Ann, I love your first card. That was a Great mix of dsp! I don’t think it was too much at all. And thanks for the dental floss tip.
I like your first instinct better. The play of patterns and colors are more interesting. Nancy B
I like the first card. I like color!
I like the first card. I like color!
I like what Kathy says from NC….
another fun & bright card; I do like the 2nd. card best. TFS & hope you’re having a nice & sunny day.
I love card #1! I love the mix of patterns and bold colors! Card #2 is nice too but your first card has my vote! Can you tell I like bold, flashy colors?
Great work with this sketch Ann-I like both cards -my fave is the first where you mixed the dsp -I like bold patterns together and this new retro fresh dsp is awesome-can’t wait to use mine on a project
I choose card #2! The DSP for me is so busy that I did not care for it, but when you put it with the light card base, ta da! I am not much on patterns but can see with card #2 how it can be very attractive. Thanks for the tip on using dental floss.
And the winner is…door number 2! The mix of patterns on card #1 was just a bit too much for me ~ I’m more of a CAS gal, I guess. My favorite part of the card, though, was the arrow with the pearls ~ perfect!
Fun card, Ann! I love seeing your CAS side, and I definately like the one with the textured white background, though they both are amazing.
I really like them both, and for different reasons. The crispness of the 2nd card is delightful, of course. But I really like the pattern play in the first card. Honestly, Ann, I could see you in my head switching out the panels….this, or that? This, or that? I know the agony of moving things and changing things until finally….ahhhh….there it is! I think you made a brilliant choice both times!
Yep . . . the second one has it!! I love the cleaner, crisp look with your second card! It’s Peachy Keen! 🙂
While I too liked your first card, my favorite is the one with the white background.
