I was thrilled when the lovely Lesley Croghan asked me to be a Guest Designer for this week’s Merry Monday challenge. This is actually a month-long “Anything Goes” challenge. I decided to do a modern twist on a traditional card, and experiment with non-traditional holiday colors. Pool Party and Melon Mambo are pretty non-traditional, don’t you think? I also wanted to design another Side Step card. This one, which I created last year, was quite traditional.
Here is this year’s “modern” version:
It’s really quite simple to make. The Trees from the Evergreen set (clear mount-127973, wood mount-
127970) were stamped multiple times in Melon Mambo and snipped out. A single one was stamped in Pool Party and adorned with…Pearls.
The sides were embossed with the Snowflake patterned Delicate Designs Textured Impressions Embossing Folder, and decorated with…Pearls!
Creating a Side-Step card is not that difficult, as this pictorial illustrates:
- Begin with a 5-1/2″ by 11″ piece of card stock. 1″ in from the 11″ side, make a cut from the 1″ mark to the 6-1/2″ mark. Flip your paper and do the same on the opposite side.
- Using your Simply Scored tool, score from the edge of the paper to the cut at 1″, 2″ and 6-1/2″. Do the same on the opposite edge.
- Score between the cuts at 5-1/2″. I have marked the lines for better visibility.
- Fold your card base as illustrated.
- To make a standard sized card which can be mailed, modify the directions above as follows: Cut from 1″ to 5-1/4″, and score the edges at 1″, 2″ and 5-1/4″. Score between the cuts at 4-1/4″.
I hope you enjoyed today’s card. Some people embrace non-traditional holiday colors. For me, it depends on the image. What do you like? Won’t you let me know in today’s comment? Your comments are important to me, and I do read each and every one of them. Of course, if you ever have a question about the cards I create, or the techniques I use, I am only an email away. Until next time…

Gosh, I saw this and totally forgot to comment. LOVE the colors and thanks for the measurements! What a show-stopper! Your cards are treasures, and always a hit at Merry Monday!
What a contrast and I love them both. I would select the card based on the person I was sending it to. I can see that my more contemporary style friends would love the modern one more and vise-versa. Thanks for the excellent pictorial. Dar back from retreat and very tired.
While I love last years card, I love this years version as well! The colors are fabulous and the dimension makes this extra special!
Ann all I can say is WOWZER!!!!
Love the colors and that tree is lovely! hugs.
this is a beautiful side-step card Ann-thanks for the tutorial as well-beautiful combo of non-traditional colors as well
Love your cards and the tutorial! The colors are beautiful. Hugs,
Your card is beautiful! Even tho I like the traditional one more, your modern one is very lovely too!
Congratulations on the GD, Ann! I was really hesitant to embrace the non-traditional colors for Christmas cards when I starting seeing them last year, but they gradually grew on me, so now I’m cool with both styles. Your cards blew me away! Thank you for the step-by-step how-to!!
I am slowly getting used to non-traditional holiday colors. This card turned out especially well.
I am always looking for non-traditional Christmas colour combos. This one is fab. I got my holiday mini in the mail and I know just what set I will be using to try this combo!
Wow…I am usually a traditional Christmas type person, but this card ROCKS! I think I might try and do both…Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful card!
What a beautiful card. I usually stick with the traditional colors like the one from a previous year, but after looking at the new one..I like both a lot. I might just try and make this one…Thanks for sharing your beautiful card
I love the traditional one the most. But, wow that modern version is a stunner! A real eye opener! Love the fun details to it. It has been awhile since I have made one of those cards, not really that hard but you have to watch where you cut! Again, your talent never ceases to amaze me with what you can come up with!

I think the non traditional colors are great! Thank you for showing how you cut the card. A fold like this scares me to make but you make it look much easier.
Wonderful! I love the traditional one you made last year but the new one is really neat!
I love both versions Ann! And thanks for the great tutorial!
I’m an old soul so my favorite is last year’s card. But, you did a great job mixing the two non-traditional colors. Love the forest of trees. There are times when I attempt different colors for Christmas – and that’s when the challenge really kicks in.
ooh-la-la! I love this card, Ann. I think I feel a CASE coming on! Merry Monday!
I love this. I might have to try for myself. I think my platform was shipped…
So beautiful!
Fresh & fun! I love the non-traditional color combo that you chose. The image is perfect for the colors.
Last year’s card was also fabulous and that image called for the traditional colors.
What fun to see you at Merry Monday, Ann! Wow, your non-traditional colors are awesome on this card. Love it!
What a great step by step, Ann! I now know how much work it is to do one of those, so thanks a million! I’ll be making one of these beauties very soon. I like both cards very much, and while your modern take is fun and pretty, I’m a sucker for the traditional one. It is just jaw droppingly beautiful. I do love the texture on the 2nd card, and all that lovely stamping.
Wow indeed. What a variation. I love it! And, thank you so much for the tutorial. I now have a new project to learn and it is so appreciated!
Holy WOW!! I prefere traditional, and really love that first card, but this new twist is quite amazing. As I’ve said before, your mind (and the places it goes) just thrills me.
