It’s Sunday and time to play with The Paper Players! This week Jaydee has a Clean and Simple Challenge for us…Make a One-Layer Card. What a challenge that was for me! Yikes! I need ribbon…and banners…and mats…and PEARLS!!! But here it is…my rendition of a one-layer Swallowtail card. Enjoy!
The Stampin’ Schach Design Tips: One Layer Card
This finished card measures 4-1/4″ wide by 5-1/2″ long.
- The ink is black…the page is white! After masking off the edges of the card base, the Swallowtail image was inked in Jet Black StazOn, creating a crisp, sharp image that jumps off the page. I really liked this elegant look. But then I was tempted to try…COLOR!
- The world is a carousel of color! I shaded the butterfly in shades of So Saffron, Tangerine Tango, and Pacific Point. The key to achieving this look was to keep the color very light.
- Love is all you need! To finish off this card, the Scripted Love stamp, from the Best of Love set, was inked in Pacific Point.
Although I felt the upper left-hand corner of this card looked mighty plain, I decided to just leave things alone. Sometimes it is best to err on the side of caution. So what do you think of my attempt at a one-layer card? Won’t you let me know in today’s comment? It is my first ever…and certainly took me outside of my comfort zone. As always, if you have any questions about today’s card, don’t hesitate to email me! Until next time…
Stamp Sets: Swallowtail, Best of Love; Inks: So Saffron, Tangerine Tango, Pacific Point, Jet Black StazOn; Card Stock: Whisper White; Tools: Blender Pens
I love this card. Just beautiful.
I saw this on pinterest and had to pop over and let you know what a beautiful, eye-catching design it is! One of the best uses of this image I’ve seen!
Very pretty, Ann! The soft shading on your butterfly is stunning! 🙂
It just goes to show a talented woman like you can do anything! This is stunning as is everything you do!!
Just perfection Ann! I love the bold black and white and your partial image. I don’t know how you did that, but it is stunning! I’m sure this was such a stretch for you, however, you mastered it! These are very challenging to me as well and I just don’t attempt them too much. The light wash of color gives me hope that maybe that is the secret. ; ) You have such a great eye for design. Love it!
Love, it Ann! Simple and yet very elegant. Great Card!
ANN! You really busted out of your chrysalis on this beauty (sorry couldn’t help myself). This is stunning. Absolutely love how you’ve stamped Swallowtail and the coloring is divine–Fabulous CAS card!
Absolutely beautiful. A great way to show people that a wonderful card can be made with a minimum of supplies! (thinking about the newbie stamper) However, as an experienced stamper I REALLY enjoy the end result of this beauty.
Well the masses have spoken, Ann. We love your card! I am so excited to try this because I have the swallowtail stamp AND I have to tell you…I never even gave Best of Love a second glance until now and I just put it on my wish list!
Ann,
It seems moot to chime in at this point. The masses have spoken. We love your card. But I did want to chime in because I am so looking forward to trying to copy this, and I never was interested in the Best of Love set until this moment. You did really good.
Michelle
I say you passed the test “with flying colors.” Sorry–bad pun. Hope you are high and dry. All the rivers and little creeks are out around here but no damage to homes etc in the area. They are going down today. D
great job with the single layer. I’m one for layers and ribbon and stuff too! This is really pretty.
WOW Simple is always so much more!My heart goes out to those who are inflicted by extreme weather right now. Hang in there! Nicole
Ann this is absolutely gorgeous! Love it. When I see simple I love it, but I have a HARD time keeping mine simple too. hugs.
Ann, your instincts to leave well alone were right. You have just proved you are the queen of CAS. This card is stunning and the coloring amazing. thank you for taking this challenge and creating such a beauty!
Hugs
Jaydee
Your coloring technique amazes me! The card is beautiful and beyond!
Simply elegant!
Just got a chance to see this, Ann and all I can say is WOW! Why is Clean and Simple not EASY? But you sure made it look like it is and elegant as well. Love the light touch of color! Beautifully done! I will be keeping this in mind with my swallowtail cards from now on.
Your card is absolutely gorgeous! So simple yet detailed. Sometimes color and composition can speak volumes! 🙂
I just tried to watch a National Geographic video on YouTube to find a message saying that the copyright holder had blocked me from viewing it because I’m not in the USA.. . Similar to HULU, and Comedy Central.. . Why?.

Ann, you nailed the challenge!! It’s beautiful! Love how you masked it and the colors are terrific!
BEAUTIFUL…
beautiful card Ann! ~ you’ve nailed this! No ribbon, no pearls…and absolutely stunning! TFS and have a wonderful day!
This is gorgeous, Ann! I love the subtle coloring of it and I love how you only show a small square of the butterfly. Great effect!
when I read the challenge from the Paper Players I had to jump over to your blog to see what you created. this is really a pretty card Ann-and I totally understand why this would be difficult for you-your layers and pearls and ribbons are always fabulous and part of your crafting signature
I can only imagine how hard this was for you. Love it though!
I can only imagine how hard this was for you. Love it though!
Ann, I have trouble with this type of card also. Clean and simple is hard for me to create. But you did a good job, and your coloring is so delicate. I hope you and Lexi get home safely today, after having a great week-end.
I think you did a fantastic job of achieving the objective. Your card is elegantly simple, just gorgeous!
Gorgeous, Ann!
Oh Ann, you did a fabulous job…love how you used only part of the butterfly…so different from any others I’ve seen and the soft colors…you rocked this one beautifully!
I really liked the unique positioning of the butterfly….. really a beautiful card. thx for sharing
You certainly rose to this challenge. Such a beautiful, striking card. You rock one layer as much as your “normal”.
Just gorgeous…sometimes the simplest is the best…thanks for sharing
I love this card Ann…….probably my favorite of all I’ve seen with this stamp. You did an outstanding job—even though there were NO pearls!!! Love…Love…Love it!!
Very pretty way to make your one-layer card, Ann! This stamp was overwhelming to me but using just a portion of it, plus coloing it lightly, creates a beauty of a card! Knowing how you like layers, I am PROUD of you!!!
Beautiful, Ann! I always have a hard time with a one layer card, too! Always feels like I need layers and at least a little embellishment. But you sure rocked this one. Love it!
Oh, wow, this really is different for you but I must say, it’s very pretty.
I like the soft coloring of the butterfly and they way you stamped just a part of it.
I know this must have been very hard for you, but it is simply ‘love’ly.
I am really impressed! Not easy to achieve, and you knocked it out of the park. I love your delicate coloring on this card…and the partial image is such a great look. I wouldn’t have wanted to risk ruining it, either. Here’s a little trick I do when I want to see how something will look without running the risk of ruining a card. I stamp on a bit of clear packaging and then place it on the card. I can tell if I like it or not and there’s no risk! I was so excited when I figured this out, and I do it all the time. But, I think this card is perfect as it stands…and I love the sentiment stamp!
Very VERY nice—what did you use to mask the image? It looks like a rough edge on some parts..I love it…
As everyone has said before me, this was truly a shocker! But a GOOD shocker! Absolutely amazing, you do CAS with the same awesome talent as you do your layered, blingy cards! Love the masked Butterfly and the subtle coloring! And that sentiment is so perfect! This is one beautiful, elegant card!
I absolutely love that stamp! You made an outstanding CAS one-layer card. See…..you can do it! I really like the subtle coloring.
WOW…couldn’t believe my eyes; Ann Schach’s blog & a one layer? the world may not come to an end, after this 1 layer card! I LLUV IT!!!
How can I say something else when everyone said it before me? This is just so amazing! I truly love this. I love the soft colors though the black and white image you showed before coloring is pretty cool too. Great job as always even though it was out of your comfort zone!

I think this is stunning.
My butterfly stamps may come out of hiding today. You have inspired me.
Sheila
Oh Ann, this card is a show-stopper! You certainly achieved the CAS look and it’s gorgeous. Love the simplicity of the card and your coloring, spot on.
Ann, this is stunning! I know that layers are your happy zone but you have created a treasure with this one! Wow!! Pinning it and will CASE this idea (if you don’t mind). Did I say wow??!!
Fabulous card Ann. Sometimes trying new things comes with great results!
I was so shocked…no pearls? No layering? But love the end result very much…I Know it was hard for you to stop…but glad you did.
This card is nothing short of amazing! Though not customary for you, I think you really nailed this work of art!
Great card Ann, very simple & beautiful! I’ll have to give this a try, tfs!
Wah?! Has someone kidnapped Ann and made her make a one-layer card! Oh the trauma!! Ann, this is so simply beautiful! You could easily create this beauty and put whatever sentiment on it in a flash! I think you should do one-layers once a week!
This is certainly different from your usual style! Very stunning, even without pearls! You have inspired me to try this with the sunflower background stamp [because I don’t have the swallowtail.] Beautiful job.
Simply stunning!
This card is just BEAUTIFUL!!! I love it…simple but so striking!!
Elegant, peaceful, perfect!
Beautiful card!
Beautiful! It surprised me to see it as it isn’t your usual card. You did a great job!
Gorgeous!
Stunning! Love it. Denise M
Ann, I couldn’t wait for you to post this card so I could comment on it! Wowwee, I love it! So clean and modern! Love how you masked and stamped just a portion of the butterfly, and the font on the greeting is just perfect. Great card.
Very nice Ann even if this card was so hard for you to pull of YOU DID IT! I love both of these stamps and for the Swallowtail I am always looking for a new way to use it.
Although we have snow here and extreme flooding, I can’t wait to see some butterflies flying around our place.
WOW Ann, this was a shocker for me too!! I’m used to seeing ribbon and layers and rhinestones on all of your creations so, when I saw this card I was very surprised. Oh, but it’s gorgeous in it’s simplicity and clean lines and the subtle coloring of this beautiful butterfly. Thank you so much for sharing.
Maria.
PS. I also want to thank you for the kind words about the card that Brian showcased on April 17th. How fabulous that it was mailed to you.
Wow! At first glance, my senses were assaulted. Being a very logical, methodical, perhaps OCD person, having the image cut off like that almost shocked me. But then something kicked in and those very same senses soared with the possibilities of what wasn’t shown. Amazing! I love the colors and I love the black and white. These would make lovely, easy, stunning note card sets. Your first ever will be hard to beat!!
