A Tale of Two Paper Pumpkin Journals

If you remember correctly, last week I did a little Stampin’ Up! Paper Pumpkin experiment with my husband.  If you did not happen to catch that post, HERE it is.  This week, I decided to try out the Paper Pumpkin Trial Kit.  The only problem was that the sample kit I received at Leadership came with only one journal to decorate.  My good friend, Brian King (Stamp with Brian), came to my rescue with this logical solution…my husband could decorate one side, and I, playing the role of seasoned stamper, could decorate the other.  Duh! Why didn’t I think of that?

While my husband worked on the actual journal, I proceeded to design and cut what I needed for my side.  I will be the first to say that he was done in ten minutes.  However, he did encounter a problem.  Let’s see if you can figure out what happened.  Here is his finished side:

Did you see the problem?  Here’s the scoop:  The “jots and thoughts” sentiment is very thin, and when he went to stamp it, he pushed too hard.  This caused it to roll a bit, making the “thoughts” part slightly crooked.  This has happened to me before with a sentiments that are small and thin.  How about you?  A perfectionist, he was upset that he “ruined” his side.  So I came to his rescue with the Word Window Punch.  He stamped it onto Crumb Cake card stock perfectly a second time, and punched it out.  Isn’t this so cute?

My Turn

Then it was my turn to step it up.  I decided to use a few new items from the Spring Catalog, such as Paper Doilies, Designer Builder Brads, and Flower Trim, as well as snippets of Designer Paper I already head.  The cute waterspots are courtesy of the adorable Waterspot stamp from the Paper Pumpkin Welcome Kit.  Let’s take a closer look at some of the details!

  • Doily Delight! A snippet from one of Stampin’ Up!’s new Paper Doilies peeks from beneath the First Edition Specialty Paper banner. For a dash of color, a scallop circle of Fan Fare Designer Paper was layered onto the doily.
  • Mark your spot! A snippet of Island Indigo Ruffled Ribbon, adorned with a Flower Trim blossom, makes a perfect bookmark.
  • Papillions and pearls! Basic Pearls adorn the body of the Butterfly Stickers which are part of the trial kit.  With its Fan Fair center, a Designer Builder Brad is the perfect chic adornment.

  1. I am glad I finally got to view your site! ( could not on sisters old laptop) I am here at the Library. You are soooo talented. Enjoyed your double bow video !!!
I will tune in more often. Thanks for being there!

  2. I really do like them both. I’m thinking I could use both of them. One would be more functional and the other more personal.

  4. I think your husband did a great job! But your version is off the charts, ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. I didn’t see his mistake either. Love both versions. Maybe with another journal a combined effort? I love little notebooks so this is a must. Quick question – will the Pumpkin kits be a surprise from now on or is there a preview?

P.S. Can you get Kim to inspire Mike to at least understand why I make cards? He still wonders why I just don’t buy them or at least sell mine!

  6. Wow..your hubby did an excellent job! I couldn’t find any mistakes. I love what you did with the doily…awesome! I wonder if you could color the doilies like in the video for the flower trim???? And, I like the ribbon bookmark. The details just amaze me every time I see one of your cards or projects. Thank you so much for sharing!

  7. I love the clean look that your husband made in decorating the journal.I think it looks awesome. I would do it that way but…….I also love your take on the journal and would probably dress it up a bit. I guess it would depend upon my mood. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I’m still trying to see where his sentiment is crooked. I do see the masculine and the feminine aspects of both sides. Good job to both of you.

  9. Now how fun is that! getting Kim to play along with you. I think they are both darling and I love all the extra embellishments you added to your half.

  10. It has already been said, but Kim is a good sport and he did a great job! His and Hers Journal; will he write from the front to middle and you from back to middle?? Love all the feminine touches and use of the new products, Ann!

  11. How fun that you have a new stamping buddy ๐Ÿ™‚ And, you two are a perfect match–both perfectionists!

Your husband did a great job again.

Your side is gorgeous. I especially like the doily on the bottom.

  12. I didn’t see anything wrong with your husband’s version so you must have taken the picture after you fixed it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Your version is really outstanding! Love it!

  13. Genius idea! I love what you are doing with Paper Pumpkin~

  14. Ann too too cute!
What a good sport your hubby is to play nice in the stamping box. I would never have known his mistake unless you pointed it out, but I have NO CD in me. I just make all my mistakes WORK! Too funny hugs.

  15. I absolutely LOOOVE your paper pumpkin journal!!! It’s GORGEOUS!! You probably knew I would like it though because of our similar tastes…vintage!!

  16. very impressed, but his problem can’t be seen thru the eyes of the computer screen…please, NO divorce in the pumpkin patch, thru stamping issues!

  17. Your side is beautiful but I would go with your husband’s side for practical reasons. If I were carrying this around in my purse, his side makes more sense. Now if if were to leave it on my night stand, I would go with your side.

  18. Ahhh, happy accidents. Aren’t they wonderful? I am very impressed with both of your journals.

  19. Uh-oh! Soon, you and the dh will be fighting over stamping space! He’s getting really good!!! I couldn’t spot his “mistake” so you did a great job of fixing it. I like his tied string on the edge of the border. Your side is classic Ann: elegant, beautiful colors, waterspots and posies…Love the flag banner with the doily peeking out, too.
