Freshly Made Sketches is celebrating its One Year Anniversary this week by opening up our Sketch Gallery and asking you to make a card using ANY of our past sketches. As for me, I selected Sketch #5, but you can access past sketches right here. I reached for the Perfectly Preserved stamp set and stamped up a jar of Blue Ribbon winning Pear Preserves! Enjoy!
Here is the sketch I used:
The Stampin’ Schach Design Tips: Perfectly Preserved
This finished card measures 4-1/4″ wide by 5-1/2″ long.
- The glass has class! A vellum overlay gives the illusion of real glass when placed over the stamped Mason jar. Strategically placed Mini Glue Dots hold it in place.
- First place! These prize-winning preserves sport an Island Indigo ribbon created from the new 1-1/4″ Scallop Circle Punch. To add depth, the “One” image from the Blue Ribbon stamp set was inked in Raspberry Ripple and stamped onto Naturals Ivory cardstock. It was then punched out with the 1″ Circle Punch. A second “One” was stamped, snipped out and “popped” on top!
- Pearls! A quintet of Basic Pearls accents the circle of patterned Raspberry Ripple from the Orchard Harvest Designer Series Paper collection.
I had a ton of fun designing today’s card. I got caught up in childhood memories of trips to the County Fair, where jams, jellies and preserves….as well as sundry other baked goods and canned items…were judged and awarded ribbons. The best of the best often went on to compete at the Iowa State Fair. From its life-size, hand-sculpted “Butter Cow” to its enormous selection of “deep-fried everything on a stick”, the Iowa State Fair delights the senses! Check out this slide show featuring Deep Fried Everything at the Iowa State Fair!
I hope you enjoyed today’s card…and just out of curiosity, have you ever tried Pear Preserves? Or have you ever attended a state fair? Won’t you let me know in today’s comment? And of course, if you ever have any questions about the cards I create or the techniques I use, I am only an email away. Until next time…

Once again, Ann, your details are out of this world! The colors, papers, pearls, textures, just EVERYTHING! Great card!
Such a fabulous card! You have such a great eye for detail. I love the vellum over the jar and the ribbon. So cute and fun!
Great card and love how you use the vellum…definitely will have to case this one…
Inky Hugs,
Terry
SERIOUSLY BEAUTIFUL!!!! Wow my friend! I love that little jar! Prize winning pears! Love it! Such a great fall card!
Your jar is delightful with the clever use of vellum to evoke the sense of glass. Brings back memories of lots of steamy hot afternoons canning with my Mom and Grandma. Lots of work, but the rewards later when we ate the contents made the efforts worthwhile!
I’ve never been to a state fair but have been to a few large county fairs. It is always a treat to take in all the sights, sounds and smells!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful card and for the trip down memory lane!
adorable. love how you put the pears in a jar.
hugs, m
Wow, adding the vellum over the pear images really gives this a pretty look. And I love that the preserves won first place!
Although there are a couple of fairs not too far from where I live I have never been to them. But I did go to a state fair in Salt Lake City once! And, sadly, I’ve never had pear preserves, but I think I’d like too!
State fairs are the best! I’ve been to one in a rural area of Pennsylvania. What a neat experience!
Your card is very sweet, Ann. Love the pears in a jar!
Another awesome card. I so love this set and can’t wait for mine to come in. It was at a state fair that I had my first deep fried corn on the cob and omg, it was soooo yummy.
A blue ribbon card for sure! Love the country look and the vellum is perfect!
I’ve been to the Iowa State Fair several times, but it’s been many years. I grew up in Bremer County and spent time at that fair every year. Loved my years in 4-H, too! This card is awesome — I may have to case this one.
Love your card. The colors and dsp are perfect for the Mason jar.
Looks like the Iowa and Illinois State Fair are very similar. Very cute card and love the creative ideas with the prize winning ribbon. Great job–I believe you also deserve the prize “blue ribbon” winner. Dar
This is darn cute! I love those preserved pears! Great colors, too!
Prize winning of course! Love the card and it does make me think about the fairs and just good ol handmade stuff! I have not made pear preserves but I made some peach butter that was to die for! Oh, wouldn’t it be fun to have the blue vellum so it does look like a Ball canning jar? Love the touch of the pearls. I just contain myself to something on a stick like a pork chop! Something about a deep fried Twinkie or Snickers just sort of makes me sort of sick feeling! I shudder at the mention of corn dogs. Anyway, love your card, a true blue winner in my book!

Prize-winning card! Your card design is fab. Love the ‘blue ribbon!’
I’ve never tried pear preserves nor have I been to a state fair. Since living in FL, though, I have been to a couple of county fairs.
What a fun card….and the memories it invokes. We go to the fair in Dallas most years, and the State Fair of Texas is the biggest! The most fun is visiting the Textile Buidling where very talented people showcase their handcrafted work. Always love your designs, Anne….thanks for the daily inspiration!
This is beautiful, Ann! I love the colors you used and the blue ribbon addition. I love fairs – growing up a city girl, I didn’t have a chance to go to very many but my college had an annual ag fair every year that was a ton of fun (and a LOT of work). I love the smells, festivities and food from the state fairs (and county fairs which can be just as serious as the state fair). Love the movie “State Fair” too! *smile*
On a side note, I have been going through serious Stampin’ Chic blog withdrawls for the last couple of weeks since I had trouble getting your blog to load. I think I finally got it worked out (for now) but I was missing my pearl fix from you!
Hi Ann! What a great card! I grew up in Minnesota so I am quite familiar with fairs. Been to the Minnesota and California State Fairs many times, but haven’t made it to Iowa. Happy Anniversary!
No, I have never been to a state fair, but plenty of local fairs. My friend still enters the jam and jelly competition every year. I am getting clogged arteries from watching your slide show, but we have some of those items at our fair too. Why are so many of the people at your fair from other areas? I love your card, especially the vellum overlay. Makes all the difference.
Mmmm, deep fried everything? Lol! I can only imagine. It has been a while since I have been to a fair, actually. WE used to go every year back home in NY though. Love your card and all of it’s fabby details. The pearls and the vellum are such wonderful touches. Have a super day! 🙂
I go to many local fairs! They are a great way to teach the next generation that farmers feed cities! Totally LOVE this card!
this is super cute, I love this set and the fabulous colors and design
Love the looks of your winning pears.
Yes, have been to the Iowa state fair, the Oklahoma and Texas state fairs.
My favorite part was going through the buildings with all the homemade baked goods as well as the canned goodies.
Also brings back memories when my mom used to do alot of canning as many Iowans did back in the day.

Wow, that is certainly not what my mind conjured up when I looked at that sketch! Your imagination always thrills me. I too have a jar set (not SU) and I use the clear plastic that comes free with packaging. I think I like the vellum better! Gotta love those fairs, although I prefer the County to the State.
OH. MY. SQUEEEEEE! This is just adorable! I love your pears under vellum – so cute!
Ann this is so cute. Love the Blue Ribbon…it IS a winner. The vellum is too cute. I did this once on a glass jar (not SU) and used a soft teal vellum because it reminded me of the mason jar glass that was teal… REally love this layout with the circle in behind the jar, and of course the pearls (fav) look fab.
We go to an annual fair at home too. Not much for corn dogs, but hey… give a deep fried elephant ear anytime! hugs.
Love your “Blue Ribbon Pears”! Don’t you just love this dsp? Great job, Ann!
