It’s time to play at PPA! Pals Paper Arts challenge #86 is Element of Style…Embossing. To emboss simply means to adorn or decorate with a raised design. Whether you use an embossing folder, embossing powder, letterpress plates, or even lines created with a stylus, the Pals are challenging you to make a “good impression” and add texture to your design! As for me, I indulged in a little “Inlaid Embossing” and created this quilt for you. My mother, aunts, and grandmother were all fabulous quilters. As for me…I will have to be content with the papercrafted version! I hope you enjoy my “Quilt for the Pals”!
- It’s hip to be square! This traditional “Box in Star” pattern is quick and easy! I simply cut four 1″ x 1″ squares from Very Vanilla card stock and four 1″ x 1″ squares from the new Paisley Petals Designer Series Paper. The DSP squares were arranged as pictured in the center of a 4″ x 4″ square of Cherry Cobbler card stock. The Very Vanilla squares were cut into triangles and adhered as illustrated.
- Be the boss…the embossing boss! The “quilt top” was then embossed using the Square Lattice Textured Impressions Embossing Folder. Hint: With “Inlaid Embossing”, you may find yourself being more successful with folders that have closely compacted patterns, such as with the Square Lattice folder.
- Decisions! Decisions! Although this card could have been made into a standard sized card, I felt that adhering the Cherry Cobbler “quilt” directly to the Not Quite Navy textured card base failed to complement the beautiful Baja Breeze DSP squares. Therefore I made the decision to mat the quilt onto Baja Breeze card stock. A 4-3/4″ wide x 5-1/4″ tall card was born, which still fits into the Stampin’ Up! square envelope.
- Finishing touches! Two lines were then embossed at the bottom of the card, just perfect for nestling three large Basic Pearls!
Quick and easy? YES! Does it look quick and easy? NO! To the non-stamper, it probably looks like you spent hours on it! But that will be your little secret. What an amazing card, Ann!!!! Love it, love it, love it. The texture really jumps out at you. 🙂
I love this card!! I am a quilter as are a few of my friends. This would make a great gift. Thank you for the extra cite- I will check it out an maybe I will be able to create a selection. Thank you for sharing!!
Oh My Gosh Ann, This is truly brilliant. I love the quilt pattern with the texture of embossing. My family has many quilt enthusiasts and to see that skill transferred into paper crafting is inspiring. We’ll have to talk at some point about quilt fairs and exhibitions that we have attended. Your color choice along with the specific quilt pattern is just so amazing. As i have said before, you are such an amazing artist and must be very patient to get this pattern correct. LUV IT!
Just fabulous! I love it. I am going to have to give this a try. Thanks so much for sharing the details.
I will be happy to let you know what I think Ann – it’s fabulous! I love the bold colors and texture and the amazing way this looks exactly like a fabric quilt. Beautiful work!
Wow! What a beautiful card!!! Just awesome 🙂
Maria
I always smile reading your posts, Ann! Somehow I want to call you the “Quilt Boss” now! Heehee! Your card is so beautiful. Sadly, I know nothing about quilting, except that I have a couple passed down from my family that I love. I wish someone taught me how to sew, haha! I think your design looks awesome and the colors have such an “Americana-vibe” to them. Have a great day! 🙂
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! XOXO
It takes a while to scroll down to the bottom of your comments!!lol Your quilting skills look as great as your cardmaking skills! Beautiful card combining the two.
It is a perfect quilt! I am a quilter, too and will try to make this card for my fellow quilters. I love the embossing!
You always go above and beyond the challenges when making your cards. This card is so beautiful! Leave it to you to not only emboss but to make a quilt pattern for your card. I ove the colors that youused for yur card Ann. 🙂

Just beautiful Ann! It looks so rich and so much like a photo of a real quilt! I enjoyed quilting for many years and still admire the work in it.
This is so beautiful, love your quilt card and the design
Gorgeous quilt, Ann! The lattice embossing really makes it look like a real quilt. I love the pattern and the card is just fabulous!
GORGEOUS! I absolutely love it. Well done!
I am going to have to make one for my MOM! I love this card, Ann!
I’ve seen so many of these quilt cards lately and you rocked it! I even went out and bought the real thing a few weeks ago-a quilt wall hanging kit to sew myself! I haven’t had to chance to start it yet but you’ve given me the ambition to get going!
Fabulous card Ann. It’s beautiful in paper and would be just as beautiful in fabric. Both of my Grandmothers were quilters. One did wool quilts and carded her own wool for the inside and then her and her friends would tuft quilt it. My other Grandmother would make quilts out of left over fabric. We used to sit and go over the quilt and point out the different things she made with the original fabric, pjs, dresses, blouses, etc. Fun times.
Oh my gosh Ann, everytime I think you have made your most beautiful card, you come along and top it! This is absolutely gorgeous, I love the quilt look and have been wanting to try it for a while now! You certainly have a way of bringing the colors and patterns alive! And I love the two embossed lines at the bottom of the card to showcase the pearls! I will definitely be checking out the link for some great patterns!
Worth the wait!
My mom is a wonderful quilter, but like you, I will stick to the paper version. Your card is lovely and I think I will make one for her. NO distressing, NO color spritzing, NO lovely ribbon embellishment. Wow, was this a hard one for you? Just kidding…it’s awesome!
I LOVE this card -how great that you used the DSP in a way I have not seen yet. The quilt and the texturing is perfect.
ann I love this quilt card-I ahve wanted to make one for awhile now-thanks for the link to get patterns-I love going to amish country in ohio to look at the beautiful quilts on display

Love your quilt card…I am going to try to make one for my DIL’s birthday…she is a quilter. Thanks for sharing
What a genius idea! I am really impressed…and it’s so pretty! Love it!
Gorgeous! Love the color choice and of course you know how I love the Square Lattice. The card design is perfect for the embossing folder!
A great look using an old craft! Nice adaptation Ann!
That’s my kind of quilting too! Love the star pattern you created. Great idea to score the lines on the bottom and add the pearls.
I love how you did this Ann…it really looks like a quilt! Gorgeous color choices too. 😉

Beautiful, brings my sweet Grandma Angeline to my memory. Just beautiful! TFS.
This is beautiful. I can’t believe it is your first quilt card!
Absolutely love this quilt card!
Fabulous! I can’t wait to show this to my quilting friend.
Ann, I would have never known this was your first quilt card. It is gorgeous. Now this I will have to try and thanks for the free quilt patterns link. The colors and design remind of my late mother and grandmothers quilt squares. Thanks for sharing.
As a quilter, your card is absolutely beautiful. You can find many free patterns on line.
The embossing makes it look like material. I love your site.

Love the card because it reminds me of comfort. Today as cold as it is here I could snuggle under a quilt to get warm. The trees look like they have dazzling diamonds on them as the sun shines on their icey branches. Priceless!

OMG!!! this is so pretty… you make it look so easy, I think I will have to try this out… This would be so cute as one of those hot chocolate/tea cards where you can slip something inside. But use chicken soup package instead.. What’s better when your sick than a comfy old quilt and some chicken soup.. and of course a sweet card like yours..lol
hugs

Yikes Ann – I could even do this – well, I think I am equally as challenged getting the little pieces in place as I am sewing (which the world is a better place because I don’t!) This is STUNNING! Thanks for blessing my day. 🙂 Woof, woof! :)))))))

love it!!!
I have been subscribing to your blog for quiet awhile now, but have been a “lurker” so to speak. I had to make a comment on your quilt card and I am so inspired to case your card…thanks so much for all your wonderful ideas!
WOW! I love it!!! I’m gonna try this…looks like a great way to make something BEAUTIFUL out of small pieces of “leftover” DSP. My best fried is a quilter and this will make a great card for her birthday. Thanks for sharing.
I have a dear, dear quilter friend, and I know a card like this will be just PERFECT for her! Thanks so much for the inspiration!
That makes a neat card. My mother used to quilt and I have two beautiful ones here. Making a paper quilt block on a card will be the only one I ever make.
Love it Ann…very creative! I was trying that embossing technique this week!! You have made it look gorgeous!
Love your Americana quilt, Ann! The colors are so crisp and bright. I love the Embedded/Inlaid embossing technique; it adds such wonderful texture to the cards. Also really like the added two lines for the pearl bling. Interestingly enough, quilting is what I had started when a good friend asked me to host a stamping workshop for her, which I did to help her. As they say: and the rest is history! Now I can do both; TFS the quilt link. Have a wonderful day, Ann!
Simply AMAZING!!!!!
My mom is a quilter too, but at 87 has had to stop–her eyes and her fingers just don’t work like they are supposed too anymore. I think this card would make a great Mother’s Day card for her, so I’m going to give it a try. Dar
I love it! The texture of that embossing folder is perfect for the quilting look. 🙂 I was going to ask how you did it, so I am glad you included some instructions and tips.
I have tried to do a quilt card before and it did not end pretty. (Me in tears, card in the trash.) Maybe I’ll try it again…maybe. LOL
This warm card is a comfort on a chilly spring morning! I love this idea, Ann!
WOW! You did a great job on this quilt! I will have to check out the link to see if I can get some inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
Ann your gorgeous creation jumped off the screen when I opened this page. Your rich quilt is wonderful and then topped off with the inlaid embossing technique — gorgeous. Of course I love the added pearls too – always do:)
This card is so cool!! Thanks for sharing it and the instructions! I can’t wait to try one.
Beautiful technique!
Love the colors, too.
Hugs, M
A showstopper for its color, technique and classic beauty! (and I am not talking about Muffy Lin!)
Leslie said … Yep – it reminds me of your mother’s or grandmother’s quilts! I am lucky enough to own a couple of those quilts. What a unique and amazing card. I have a friend who quilts so I must try one of these cards for her!
Ooohh love it! Right now this is my favorite technique. Love the look you got and the quilt look is a great idea. I will have to try this. An of course your little extra you added with the embossed lines on the bottom – clever.
OMGosh Ann, love this! What a unique and classy look!
Ann I LOVE your quilt card. It’s just beautiful! I really like how you matted the quilt on the lighter blue to make it POP! And it does! But what I think is so cool, is the two lines of embossing at the bottom to showcase your pearls. Hugs.
Wow, you’re right this doesn’t look easy…it’s gorgeous and I love the textured embossing…looks like a real quilt! Great Job Ann.
The perfect quilt! The Box In Star pattern is one of my favorites. Another incredible job!
This is really so pretty. Love the quilted look. My grandmother was a quilter as is my mom, I think she is working on about 3 right now. Me, nope never really wanted to.
I love this card! Your “quilt” is beautiful and I love the texture.
Such a beautiful card. Love the quilt look!!! Hugs,
